CJIA passenger reportedly turned away by police over suitcase report, probe launched

Cheddi Jagan International Airport

The Guyana Police Force has launched an investigation into allegations that a passenger involved in a suitcase mix-up at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri was turned away while attempting to make a report at more than one police station.

In a statement, the force said the Office of Professional Responsibility has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the complaint and to determine whether there was any breach of policy, procedure or professional conduct by the ranks involved.

According to the police, the incident stemmed from a mix-up involving luggage at the airport, after which the affected passenger sought to make a report to facilitate further action.

The force stressed that members of the public should not be turned away when seeking to make a report at a police station. It said that even where a matter falls within the jurisdiction of another station, the report must still be received and properly recorded before being referred through the appropriate police channels.

“The ranks identified in the complaint have since been rotated for developmental and administrative purposes while the matter is being reviewed,” the force said.

The force said it remains committed to professional service delivery, accountability and ensuring that members of the public are treated with courtesy, fairness and respect when seeking police assistance.

Investigations are continuing.
