Allan Sim has been sentenced to 35 years in prison for the 2015 murder of his former partner, Melissa Skeete, following a retrial before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the High Court in Georgetown.
Sim was found guilty by a jury of unlawfully killing Skeete, a hospital ambulance dispatcher, who was stabbed to death on November 23, 2015.
The prosecution was led by State Counsel Rodley Mattoo and Senior State Counsel Cecilia Corbin, who successfully secured the conviction and sentence.
The conviction follows a retrial that was ordered after Sim successfully appealed his original conviction and 60-year prison sentence. In that earlier trial, Sim had been convicted before Justice Navindra Singh and sentenced to 60 years’ imprisonment for Skeete’s murder. The appellate court later set aside the conviction and ordered that the matter be retried before a new judge and jury.
During the retrial, the court heard that Sim and Skeete became involved in an argument while travelling in his vehicle. The dispute reportedly stemmed from Skeete’s relationship with another man. Police investigators testified that Sim admitted stabbing the woman during the confrontation.
Skeete, a mother of four, was fatally stabbed on November 23, 2015. Her death left four children without their mother, including two whom she shared with Sim.
Following the jury’s guilty verdict at the conclusion of the retrial, Justice Kissoon sentenced Sim to 35 years’ imprisonment.
