Fire threat at Robb St store quelled

A fireman at the scene

Swift action by members of the Guyana Fire Service yesterday morning avoided what could have been a major fire on Robb Street at a Chinese-owned store.

According to a statement on its Facebook page, the fire service said it responded to an early-morning alert of a fire at Lot 87 Robb Street in Lacytown, Georgetown, where a storage bond attached to Sue Fashion was found to be emitting smoke.

The fire service said that one water tender and two water carriers were dispatched to the scene shortly after the information was received.

On arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the storage facility and immediately activated established fire-fighting protocols.

Swift action by ranks on the scene prevented the fire from spreading, and the blaze was subsequently brought under control and extinguished.

No injury was reported.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
