GPHC doctors were not terminated for gross negligence – ministry

The Ministry of Health yesterday said that two doctors named in a Kaieteur News article were not dismissed by the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for gross negligence, contrary to a claim made in the newspaper.

In a release responding to a report published in  the June 25, 2026 edition of the newspaper  under the headline, `Doctors fired over toddler’s death quietly rehired by Ministry of Health, placed at Diamond hospital,’ the ministry said the article incorrectly stated that Dr. Marissa Seepersaud and Dr. Yala Gomez had been terminated for gross negligence.

According to the ministry, while the contracts of both doctors were terminated by the GPHC, the terminations were carried out in accordance with the terms of their respective employment contracts.

It said the doctors received all contractual benefits, including salary, gratuity, allowances, vacation allowance, payment for accrued leave and salary in lieu of notice.

“For the avoidance of doubt, neither contract of employment was terminated for gross negligence as alleged in the article or at all,” the ministry said, adding that the allegation, if left uncorrected, could have a damaging impact on the doctors’ reputations.

The ministry has requested that Kaieteur News publish a correction or retraction at the earliest opportunity and accord it the same prominence as the original article.
