The police say they are investigating a two-vehicle accident that occurred around 5 pm on Friday on the Garden of Eden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, involving a motor lorry and a car driven by a deputy superintendent of police.
According to a police statement, the collision involved motor lorry GAD 9996, driven by a 26-year-old man of Ogle, East Coast Demerara, and motor car PAF 8496, which was being driven by the 49-year-old officer attached to the Immigration Department.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the car was proceeding south along the eastern driving lane when the northbound lorry, which was travelling on the eastern side of the western carriageway, allegedly veered onto the eastern driving lane and collided with the right front of the car.
The impact caused the car to spin before coming to rest facing south-east. The police officer sustained injuries and was assisted by an emergency medical team before being taken to the New Diamond Regional Hospital.
She was examined by a doctor and treated for bodily pain and a fractured right arm.
A breathalyser test administered to the lorry driver detected no alcohol in his system.
Investigations are continuing.
