Police have identified the man who died in last Saturday’s accident on the Providence Public Road, East Bank Demerara , as 36-year-old Ruddy Raymond of Essequibo Coast.
Raymond, was among the passengers in minibus BAH 9443, which collided with a lorry and then overturned into the path of an oncoming car along the roadway.
According to a police statement, the minibus, driven by a 31-year-old Kitty resident, was proceeding north along the eastern driving lane of the western carriageway of the Providence Public Road. A motor lorry, GAF 1093, driven by a 55-year-old man of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, was also travelling north in the western driving lane.
Investigators were told that the lorry made a sharp right turn and entered the path of the minibus, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.
The impact caused the minibus to strike the median, cross into the eastern carriageway and topple onto its right side before colliding with motor car PJJ 1664, which was being driven south by a 28-year-old Diamond resident.
Police said the driver of the car and a 23-year-old female occupant of Friendship, East Bank Demerara, sustained minor injuries. The minibus driver and seven passengers were also injured.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene, where Raymond was examined by a doctor and pronounced dead.
His body was later taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
The injured survivors were transported to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where they received medical treatment.
Kiskadee Watch had previously reported that the accident occurred at around 16:30 and according to video footage circulating on social media the bus was proceeding north along the road when a canter truck attempted to change lanes. The minibus driver appeared to swerve in an effort to avoid the canter, but collided with it before crashing into another vehicle travelling south along the roadway.
Meanwhile, the camera footage shows the vehicle travelling at high speed when the driver apparently lost control, mounted the median and struck a section near a lamp post before spinning and coming to a stop on top of the other vehicle.
