Police seeking legal advice in WIN MP’s firearm case

Natasha Singh-Lewis

The Guyana Police Force is preparing a case file for legal advice as its investigation continues into the discovery of a Glock 19 9mm pistol and ammunition following Tuesday night’s confrontation involving We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) Members of Parliament at Friendship, East Bank Demerara.

The latest police update has formally placed WIN MP Natasha Singh-Lewis, her husband Shane Fordyce and fellow MP Dawn Hastings-Williams at different stages of the investigation, with Singh-Lewis released on $200,000 cash bail while Fordyce remains in police custody.

But Singh-Lewis told Kiskadee Watch last evening that her husband was also released on $200,000 bail on Wednesday night and questioned if the police knew who exactly they have in custody. She posited that the force must be running a “cake shop” operation if they are saying that she was released on bail while he remains in custody.

Meanwhile, police continued that investigators contacted Singh at about 09:00 hrs on Wednesday, August 26, and informed her that she was suspected of possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence. She was cautioned and, acting on the advice of her attorney, provided a written statement to investigators.

About two hours later, at 10:58 hrs, investigators contacted Fordyce and informed him of the same alleged offence. He was also cautioned and provided a written statement after consulting with his attorney.

Police are seeking to establish the circumstances surrounding the firearm, which was reportedly discovered during a search of a motor car connected to the opposition delegation following the confrontation at Friendship.

Hastings-Williams was interviewed at Regional Police Division 4 ‘B’ Headquarters, and according to police, she provided a statement and handed over a copy of Firearm Licence No. 191501, dated February 16, 2026, for a Glock 19 9mm pistol bearing serial number BBVD168.

Police subsequently lodged the firearm, magazine and ammunition at the Ballistics Section at Eve Leary for safekeeping.

Speaking publicly on Friday, Singh disputed reports about her arrest and spoke about what occurred after she left the vessel to use the washroom while police and Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard personnel were attempting to search the boat. She said that after returning to the area, she encountered police at the compound’s gate and was informed that persons leaving by land were required to be searched because police suspected illegal substances and other items were aboard the vessel.

Singh-Lewis said she agreed to a search but insisted that a female officer search her, and she subsequently consented to a search of the vehicle in which she and Hastings-Williams had placed their belongings.

According to Singh-Lewis, officers searched the vehicle before opening a bag belonging to Hastings-Williams, which had been left inside the car after Hastings-Williams returned to the boat.

Singh-Lewis said it was during that search that officers discovered the firearm in the bag. She said she knew Hastings-Williams had a firearm in the bag but claimed she did not know it was there at the time.
