St Joseph Mercy Hospital (SJMH) yesterday marked its 81st anniversary, celebrating more than eight decades of providing medical and nursing care in Guyana.
The Catholic healthcare institution was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in September 1945. According to a release from the hospital, it has developed from a small infirmary into a multi-specialty institution offering diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic services.
The hospital said it has continued to operate on the principle of providing competent healthcare without distinction based on race, colour or creed.
Communication Coordinator Terry Mohamed, who has served the institution for more than three decades, said the hospital’s relationship with patients frequently continues after they have been discharged.
“It has been a blessing and privilege to serve Mercy Hospital for over three decades,” Mohamed was quoted as saying. “We at Mercy not only care for patients’ needs, but ensure that we accompany them even after they are discharged.”
Chief Operations Officer Jerri Dias said the anniversary was a tribute to the hospital’s medical personnel, nurses, support staff and the Sisters of Mercy.
“As healthcare in Guyana evolves, we remain focused on advancing our facilities, embracing modern technology and, above all, preserving the patient-first care that has defined our institution for over eight decades,” he said.
SJMH provides emergency, obstetrics and gynaecology, surgical, paediatric, internal medicine and rehabilitation services.
The hospital said it also assists underserved communities and participates in public-health initiatives throughout the country.
According to the release, work is continuing to modernise its diagnostic equipment, laboratory services and patient-care facilities to meet the needs of Guyana’s growing population.
