Thirty-two recruits join Prison Service after  intensive training

The new recruits with prison officials

On Thursday, August 27, 2026, the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) inducted 32 recruits after they successfully completed an intensive three-month training programme under Recruit Course 3/2026.

A release from the GPS said that the recruits underwent rigorous training to prepare for essential roles in prison administration, inmate rehabilitation support, facility operations, and broader national security functions.

“Their deployment will significantly enhance the Guyana Prisons Service’s capacity while offering young Guyanese dignified career pathways within one of the country’s key security institutions”, the GPS said.

Addressing the passing out ceremony at the Mazaruni Prison, Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to creating sustainable employment opportunities for youth. He applauded the recruits for their dedication throughout training and encouraged them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism as they assume their duties in service to the nation.

Elliot told the new officers that the prison service was not solely about confinement but also about corrections, skill development, and reintegration.

The director noted that prison work is demanding and involves working with men and women “who have been deprived of their liberty, many of whom are likely to be mentally disturbed, suffering from addiction, have poor social and educational skills, and come from marginalized groups in society”.
