Briton John’s absence from last year’s National Road Race opened the door for a new champion on that occasion, but his return this morning quickly restored him to the top of Guyana’s cycling ranks.
John, representing We Stand United, won the Elite category when the Guyana Cycling Federation’s 2026 National Championships concluded along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway in demanding conditions.
The win saw John reclaim the National Road Race crown after missing the 2025 edition, when he surrendered the title. His victory came in the feature 167.3-kilometre race, which required the Elite and Under-23 riders to complete four laps of the course.
Kaieteur Attack Cycle Club’s (KARCC) Andre Greene produced a strong ride to finish second in the Elite category, while his teammate and veteran rider Alex Mendes completed the podium in third.

Kaieteur Attack also had success in the Under-23 category, where Ajani Cutting continued his impressive form by taking the title from last year’s overall and U23 winner Aaron Newton of KFC Evolution.
Cutting led the way in the category, while his clubmate Sidwell Sandy finished second. Newton had to settle for third this time around.

In the Female category, Denise Jeffery of KFC Evolution claimed first place, while Tandiea Noel of Kaieteur Attack Cycle Club won the junior female category.
The Masters 35+ category was won by Kristian Jeffery of KFC Evolution, who produced an impressive ride in another competitive battle. Seagun Hubbard, also of KFC Evolution, finished second, while unattached rider Devendra Sahadeo placed third.
The Junior category delivered one of the closest finishes of the day, with Alex Newton of KFC Evolution edging defending champion Alexander Leung of Continental. The two riders stayed together for most of the race before Newton launched a late attack and pipped Leung by inches at the line. Kevin Stephen of Velocity finished third.
In the Masters 50+ category, Nigel London of We Stand United took first place. Ray Harlequin of Flying Stars finished second, while Shurland Sue-Hang of Carlton Wheelers rounded out the podium in third.
Today’s race began at the roundabout before entering Linden, continued to Netsurf Park, and then returned to the point of origin to complete one lap.
The Female category covered 41.8 kilometres, or 26 miles, over one lap. Juveniles were scheduled to cover 62.7 kilometres, or 39 miles, over one and a half laps. Juniors and Masters 50+ riders covered 83.6 kilometres, or 52 miles, over two laps, while the Elite Men and U23 riders covered 167.3 kilometres, or 104 miles, over four laps.
The National Championships began on June 14 with the Individual Time Trials at the inner circuit of the National Park. Marcus Keiler dethroned Aaron Newton to win the Elite time trial crown, while Alexander Leung in the Juniors, Newton in the U23 category and Denise Jeffery in the Women’s Elite category all repeated as champions in their respective divisions.
