Heavy winds damage roof at new Anna Regina stadium; no injuries reported

Sections of the roof at the newly constructed Anna Regina stadium were damaged yesterday after heavy winds and persistent rainfall affected parts of Essequibo and other areas across Guyana.

According to information shared by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, strong gusts associated with the weather system ripped off portions of the roofing material at the Region Two facility, which is in its final stages of preparation ahead of its scheduled opening next month.

No injuries were reported at the stadium during or after the incident.

Later in the afternoon, a team led by Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Steven Jacobs, visited the facility to assess the situation.

Officials connected to the project said emergency repair teams have already been mobilised and are expected to begin restoration works immediately. Engineers are also examining the structure to determine whether any additional reinforcement will be needed before the venue is officially commissioned.

The adverse weather affected several communities along the Essequibo Coast and other parts of the country, with reports of fallen branches and temporary power disruptions in some areas.

The Anna Regina stadium is expected to become a major sporting hub for Region Two, and its upcoming inauguration has been highly touted by the ministry.

Authorities said further updates will be provided as assessments continue and repair works progress at the stadium.
