Mabaruma health centre to serve over 1,400 residents

The new Mabaruma Health Centre.

A new health centre commissioned at Mabaruma on Wednesday will serve more than 1,400 residents of Mabaruma Settlement and nearby communities, providing maternal and child health services, outpatient clinics and other primary healthcare.

The facility will complement the Mabaruma Regional Hospital by providing an additional point of care for residents.

Housing Minister and Region One parliamentary representative Collin Croal joined Education Minister Sonia Parag at the commissioning.

In his remarks, Croal said the number of health facilities in Region One had increased from 31 in 2020 to 61. He said access to healthcare should not depend on how far residents live from a hospital.

Croal also pointed to improvements at the Mabaruma Regional Hospital, including a 24-hour pharmacy and approximately 50 inpatient beds, and the expansion of telemedicine services to reach remote communities.

Regional Chairman Brentnol Ashley, Vice-Chairman Paul Pierre, Regional Executive Officer Dr Steven Cheefoon and Regional Health Officer Dr Mitchel Pierre were among those attending.
