Letters To The Editor

Consultative approach will be very useful in design of any planned expansions to  Capital

Dear Editor,

The Minister of Local Government has been posting on her Facebook page the progress that has been gained in the cleaning up of one of our main cemeteries. I had suggested to her to add trees, benches, and a flower shop where those visiting may purchase flowers to honour their dead. As the cemeteries develop, we should consider having sections for different religions or sections based on family name, but either way a map of where tombs are located should be placed within a small management office that not only helps manage the maintenance of the grounds and supporting services but also provides a guide for those looking for the final resting place of their loved ones. Additionally, it would also be good to allow for public consultation or the submission of ideas on how best to facilitate the ongoing grieving process for those who have lost their loved ones.

Expanding such a public consultative process to larger projects will also allow our community to take ownership in the design of our nation, and we should encourage more of this type of process going forward. This consultative approach will also be very useful in the design of any planned expansions to the Capital or the establishment of new towns and cities as was recently mentioned by the King’s Foundation and the Government prior to the King’s visit. Each anchor village or town should have a somewhat uniformed design in terms of content with fundamental elements such as clinics, schools, places of worship, cemeteries, places for cremation and town or neighbourhood councils within them. And most importantly the members of the community should have a say in how it is designed, maintained and managed. This not only fosters inclusiveness and engagement, but it also encourages members of the community to respectfully utilize what their community has created. Guyana is ours and we graciously share it with our visitors. We must take pride in what we have and develop our nation in a manner that is respectful to all participants who support and help pursue our success.

Best regards,

Mr. Jamil Changlee
