Spirit of resilience: Lula and Windies cricket

Dear Editor,

“Hope springs eternal in the human breast,” penned Alexander Pope in his 1733 Epistle to his erudite companion Lord Bolingbroke, and recent events in geopolitics and sport prove his words true. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (bearing the hypocorism of Lula) remarkable victory in Brazil’s presidential runoff election offers a powerful testimony to democratic resilience, even as the world faces rising jingoism and growing uncertainty.

Lula’s comeback was most fascinating. After losing the first round to Flávio Bolsonaro, Lula recorded an unprecedented resurgence, securing 51.8% of the vote. In just three weeks, his movement rallied over 10 million additional voters. Grassroots marches, civic outreach, and the rapid growth of the “Lula’s Army” WhatsApp channel, which expanded to nearly 11 million followers, seized a hostile digital territory and turned the tide.  Lula’s victory engenders renewed momentum for democratic governance and vital environmental protections, built on a noticeable drop in Amazon and Cerrado destruction during his stewardship.

However, not all challenges have been vanquished. Bolsonaristas have made significant gains in key legislative and gubernatorial battles. “In the Amazon region itself, far-right members of Bolsonaro’s movement have won the governorships of seven of the nine states and a large number of municipal mayorships,” writes Johnathan Watts in The Guardian. Further afield, Lula stands alone as a major proponent of left-wing policies in a continent beholden to Donald Trump and his dictates. Right-wing leaders have risen to power, most notably in Argentina, Chile, and Colombia. Regardless, Lula’s victory offers a template for progressive movements worldwide to confront the far-right.

This spirit of resilience echoes beyond politics into the sporting arena. West Indies cricket fans found equal cause for elation in the team’s decisive eight-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first Test. This victory comes amid announced pay cuts to West Indies contracts during a multi-year financial crisis afflicting Cricket West Indies. The performance continues a commendable run following competitive T20 (2-2) and ODI (2-1) series against India, bringing joy to West Indies supporters.

These events should not, by any means, be treated as a turnaround. Lula faces formidable opposition both at home and abroad. Likewise, Cricket West Indies (CWI) remains engrossed in miserable financial straits. However, momentum belongs to those who organise and persevere. We should all be douloi, or bondservants, as the Apostle Paul was to Christ, even in an ever-darkening world.

Yours truly,

Jordon Nelson
