Sod turned for $1.2b Amerindian Hostel

The site for the hostel

The sod was turned yesterday for a $1.2b Amerindian Hostel at Ogle.

Senior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance Dr. Ashni Singh during the sod turning emphasized that through all of its investments, government’s intention is to ensure that every single Amerindian village across the country has a viable village economy. A release from the Ministry of Finance said that Singh was delivering the feature address at the event.

The  current Amerindian Hostel in Georgetown has been widely criticized as inadequate and in poor condition.

The event also saw the attendance of Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek, Minister of Housing Collin Croal and Member of Parliament and Vice-Chairman of the National Toshaos Council Sonia Latchman.

The new Amerindian Hostel to be constructed was included in the 2026 Budget. The current Hostel in Georgetown was constructed in 1972. The new hostel is designed to house 300 persons at any one time.

A release from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs said that the project will be undertaken by contractor Mac Junior International.

“Once completed, the new hostel will provide improved accommodation and a more comfortable environment for Indigenous residents travelling from their communities to access essential services and opportunities in Georgetown”, the release added.
