Nigel Baptiste makes early exit from Republic

Nigel Baptiste

(Trinidad Guardian) Nigel Baptiste is retiring as group president and CEO of Republic Financial Holdings Ltd (RFHL) and president and managing director of Republic Bank Ltd (RBL), bringing to an end a career spanning more than three decades with the financial institution, including ten years at its helm.

Baptiste’s final day will be November 13, with Karen Yip Chuck assuming both positions effective November 14, RFHL announced yesterday.

Yip Chuck’s appointment makes her the first woman to lead the Republic Group, one of the Caribbean’s largest financial institutions. She has spent 36 years with Republic Bank and was a member of its executive leadership team.

In a news release announcing the executive change, RFHL said Baptiste had originally been scheduled to retire on May 10, 2026, but agreed to remain with the organisation until the end of its financial year, which was September 30.

In a news release on January 30, the banking group had advised of the appointment of Richard Sammy as group president and CEO of RFHL and president and managing director of RBL, with effect from January 1, 2027. Sammy served as group vice president of RFHL from November 2022 until October 14, when he left the group without explanation. RFHL announced then that Yip Chuck would assume the top job at the financial company on January 1, 2027, subject to regulatory approval.

RFHL said during Baptiste’s decade as chief executive, the group doubled its asset base and expanded its operational footprint across 16 territories. It also credited his leadership with significantly expanding its corporate social responsibility and community development initiatives throughout the region.

In the news release, RFHL chairman Yashmid Karamath praised Baptiste’s contribution, particularly his commitment to developing the institution’s next generation of leaders.

He said Baptiste’s legacy extended beyond the Group’s financial achievements and regional expansion, highlighting his investment in people and communities.

Karamath said Baptiste had mentored and empowered employees, helping to nurture a new generation of leaders and continuing the institution’s tradition of developing talent from within its ranks.

Yip Chuck takes over after a 36-year career with Republic Bank, during which she held senior responsibilities in operational risk management, corporate governance and corporate banking.

RFHL said she strengthened and aligned the bank’s operational risk framework with international standards, while championing products designed to respond to changing customer requirements.

She also played a significant role in expanding corporate banking relationships across the Caribbean, providing advisory support to businesses and contributing to economic diversification in the markets where the Group operates.

In her first comments following the announcement, Yip Chuck said she was honoured to succeed Baptiste and intended to build on the foundation established during his tenure.

“Throughout my 36 years with Republic, I have lived by the belief that the Bank will only thrive when its people thrive,” she said.

She identified employee development, stronger customer relationships and the delivery of enduring value to employees, shareholders, customers and communities as priorities for her leadership.

Karamath said the board had confidence in Yip Chuck’s ability to guide the organisation, citing her commercial experience, governance credentials and understanding of the diverse markets in which the Group operates.
