Massy yesterday officially turned the sod for a new US$75 million business hub at Houston, East Bank Demerara, describing the investment as one that will strengthen its operations in Guyana while supporting the country’s food distribution network and automotive sector.
The ceremonial sod-turning was held at Massy Distribution’s Montrose, East Coast Demerara headquarters due to inclement weather and health and safety considerations. Company officials explained that although the ceremony was relocated, the symbolic sod used during the event was taken directly from the Houston project site.
The development will become the future home of a new Massy Distribution warehouse along with a Massy Motors dealership and service centre.
Among those attending the ceremony were Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar, Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) Peter Ramsaroop, Chairman of the Massy Group Robert Riley and President and Chief Executive Officer of the Massy Group James Mc Letchie. The event also coincided with the company’s observance of 58 years of operations in Guyana.
Chairman and Country Manager of Massy Guyana, Troy Beharry, said the investment represents one of the company’s largest commitments in the country and reflects confidence in Guyana’s long-term economic prospects. He said the Houston site will be transformed over the next 18 months into a modern, technology-driven business hub centred around a new 200,000-square-foot distribution warehouse.
According to him, the facility will significantly expand Massy’s distribution capacity and improve its ability to serve customers, retailers and suppliers across Guyana.
“At the heart of this investment is a new 200,000-square-foot warehouse. This facility will significantly strengthen our distribution business and improve our ability to serve customers, retailers, suppliers and communities across Guyana with greater efficiency, capacity and reliability,” he said.
Beharry added that the warehouse is expected to enhance Guyana’s food security value chain by increasing the company’s capacity to store, transport and distribute food and other essential products more efficiently. “It will improve our capacity to store, move and distribute food and essential products more efficiently and reliably, supporting a stronger, more resilient supply chain for the country,” he said.
In addition to the warehouse, the development will include modern automotive and machinery showrooms, office space and warehouse facilities to support Massy Motors’ operations.
Indar said the scale of the investment demonstrates the private sector’s confidence in Guyana’s expanding economy. “This US$75 million investment is a signal of confidence in the Guyanese economy. If the Massy Group, with its smart thinking, can invest this amount of money in the economy, it means they’ve seen something good in the economy,” Indar expressed.
