Chief Magistrate, judicial officers in visit to Lusignan Prison

The judicial officers on the visit.

Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman and a delegation of judicial officers visited the Lusignan Prison on Friday as part of an effort to gain a better understanding of the prison environment and the operational and administrative challenges facing the Guyana Prison Service (GPS).

According to the GPS, the delegation included newly appointed Magistrates Ocelisa Marks, Nikkisha Logan, Jimelle Joseph, Shareefah Parks, Taneisha Saygon and Caressa Henry, along with Court Administrator Monique Ifill, Drug Treatment and Mental Health Court Manager Dion Chase, Administrative Officer of the Judicial Service Commission Julianna Hollingsworth and Assistant Protocol and Communication Officer Bhanmattie Ramdial.

The visitors were welcomed by Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot, who underscored the importance of continued collaboration between the judiciary and the prison service.

During the visit, Elliot briefed the delegation on the prison service’s ongoing transformation, saying that its approach is centred on rehabilitation, reintegration and the restoration of human dignity.

Magistrate Latchman, in response, welcomed the engagement and said the Magistracy remains committed to strengthening its collaborative relationship with the prison service.

The delegation was later taken on a tour of the Lusignan Prison, where they viewed the new administrative building under construction, virtual courtrooms, the kitchen, medical centre, trade shop, inmate accommodation, intake processing area and the command centre.
