Guyana enjoyed a successful night in the boxing ring at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo on Sunday, with Terron Wintz, Desmond Amsterdam and Colin Lewis all advancing to the quarterfinals of their respective weight divisions.
Wintz produced a dominant display to defeat Saint Lucia’s Kyghan Mortley by a unanimous 5-0 decision in their men’s 70kg Round of 16 contest at Combat Pavilion No. 2.
Fighting from the red corner, Wintz controlled the bout from the opening bell and won all three rounds on each judge’s scorecard. Mortley was also handed a standing count after suffering the only knockdown of the contest in the second round.
Judges Wilfredo Vazquez of Cuba, Francisco Romero of Mexico, Kalinda Raiol Vieira of Brazil, Latasha Washington of the United States and Billy Rosario of Puerto Rico all scored the contest 30-27 in favour of Wintz.
The Guyanese maintained steady pressure throughout the three rounds, while Mortley was unable to find an effective response. No warnings were issued during the contest, which was officiated by Colombian referee Juan Fernandez Mora.
Desmond Amsterdam also secured an impressive victory, stopping Dominica’s Daniel Shillingford in the second round of their men’s 80kg Round of 16 bout.
Amsterdam established control during the opening round, with all five judges scoring it 10-9 in his favour. He continued to apply pressure in the second before Cuban referee Wilfredo Vazquez stopped the contest at one minute and 18 seconds.
There were no knockdowns or warnings before the referee’s intervention. Amsterdam will now face the winner of Bout Three in the quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, Colin Lewis completed Guyana’s successful outing with a unanimous decision victory over Barbados’ Peter Murray in the men’s 65kg Round of 16.

All five judges awarded the fight to Lewis, with scorecards of 30-27, 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 and 30-27.
The three victories ensured that Guyana remained firmly in contention for medals in the boxing competition.
