Guyana collected two medals in squash at the Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday, with Ashley Khalil and Mary Fung-A-Fat earning silver in the women’s doubles and Jason-Ray Khalil and Kirsten Gomes securing bronze in the mixed doubles.

Khalil and Fung-A-Fat reached the women’s doubles final but were denied the gold medal by Colombia’s Laura and Paula Tovar, who recorded an 11-1, 11-6 victory.

The Guyanese pair struggled to settle into the opening game but produced a stronger performance in the second. However, the Colombians maintained control and closed out the contest in straight games.

Khalil and Fung-A-Fat had advanced to the gold medal match after defeating Guatemala’s Tabita Gaitan and Darlyn Sandoval in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Jason-Ray Khalil and Gomes secured Guyana’s second squash medal after reaching the mixed doubles semifinals.

The Guyanese combination faced Mexico’s Alfredo Avila and Luz Lopez in the last four but suffered an 11-4, 11-0 defeat. Both losing semifinalists receive bronze medals under the competition’s format, ensuring Khalil and Gomes finished on the podium.

Guyana’s squash players will now turn their attention to the team competition, which begins on August 6. Khalil and Gomes will compete in the men’s and women’s events, while Ashley Khalil and Fung-A-Fat will also return to action.
