Drayton launches Pegasus Weekly Chess League

FIDE Master Anthony Drayton will launch the inaugural Pegasus Weekly Chess League on Monday at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston.

FIDE Master Anthony Drayton will launch the inaugural Pegasus Weekly Chess League on Monday at the Pegasus Hotel in Kingston, offering players an opportunity to compete in regular, structured matches.

The seven-round league is an initiative of Drayton’s Chess Club and is being staged in partnership with the Pegasus Chess Club and the Guyana Chess Federation. Matches will be played at The Oasis Building at the Pegasus Hotel, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The opening round is scheduled for August 17, followed by matches on August 24 and 31. The remaining rounds will be contested on September 7 and October 5, 12 and 19.

Players will contest one serious game during each round, using a time control of 60 minutes with a five-second increment. The competition is open to all serious chess players, but registration must be completed before participation.

The full seven-round entry fee is G$6,000, while players can enter individual rounds for G$2,000 per night. Registration and payment will be conducted online, with MMG payments accepted.

Sixty per cent of the registration fees will form the competition’s prize pool. The winner will receive 50 per cent of that amount, while the second and third-place finishers will collect 30 and 20 per cent, respectively. A monthly champion will also receive a title and recognition.

The league is intended to help grow the local chess community while providing players with consistent competitive action and opportunities to improve their game.

Interested players can contact the organisers on 613-2083 or by email at [email protected].
