Guyana to host CBU General Assembly and Media Awards

Guyana will host the Caribbean Broadcasting Union’s (CBU) 57th General Assembly and Media Awards from August 17 to 19, bringing together broadcasters, media executives and other industry professionals from across the Caribbean and further afield.

In a release, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) said associated activities will begin on August 16. This will be the first time in more than a decade that the event is being held in Guyana.

The programme will include delegates’ tours, an exhibitors’ and partners’ showcase, the Annual General Assembly plenary, a media technology seminar, an opening ceremony and Hall of Fame induction, a conference and the CBU Media Awards gala.

President Irfaan Ali is expected to deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony on Tuesday evening. Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Information and Public Affairs Kwame McCoy will address the conference.

McCoy chairs the LOC, while National Communications Network Chief Executive Officer and Guyana’s Country Director to the CBU Neaz Subhan serves as co-chair.

According to the release, the assembly will allow CBU members to discuss issues affecting the regional media industry, exchange experiences and examine opportunities for development and cooperation in a changing global media environment.

The LOC said this year’s Media Awards received a record number of submissions. The awards recognise work produced by media professionals and organisations across the Caribbean.

Guyana is represented in the CBU by the National Communications Network, News Room and the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority.

The LOC said final preparations are underway to host the regional and international delegates.
