Prosper Jacobus struck a crucial unbeaten half-century before Transport Cricket Club survived a tense finish to defeat Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) by one run and advance to the final of the Georgetown Cricket Association Under-17 Eline Security Logistics 50-Overs competition.
Playing at the Transport Sports Club ground yesterday, the hosts posted 186 in 45.4 overs before dismissing DCC for 185 in 38.2 overs.
Transport were in trouble during their innings, but Jacobus steadied the lower order with an unbeaten 53 from 72 balls. He focused on rotating the strike and keeping the ball along the ground to guide his side to a competitive total.
“I would say I played a recovery innings, was just trying to play the ball on the ground and try to bring the team to a defendable total,” Jacobus told Kiskadee Watch.
Emmanuel Lewis provided valuable support with a brisk 29 from 26 balls, hitting four fours and one six, while Hezekiah Hohenkirk contributed 21.
Kaylon Callender led DCC’s bowling effort with figures of 3-27, while Jermane Grovsnor claimed 2-27.
DCC appeared on course for victory after reaching 113 for three in their reply. Grovsnor attacked the Transport bowlers, blasting 53 from only 33 deliveries with five fours and three sixes. Yeshua Hutson scored 28, while Kaiden Smith added 25.
However, Transport fought back strongly as DCC suffered a dramatic middle and lower-order collapse, slipping to 160 for nine.
Makai Dowlin kept DCC’s hopes alive with an unbeaten 21 from 27 balls, but the chase ended just short when the visitors were bowled out for 185.
Nyia Latchman took 3-29 and Mickel Johnson captured 3-36 to lead Transport’s successful defence.
“It’s a good feeling knowing I contributed to helping them over the line and into a place in the final,” Jacobus said.
Transport’s narrow victory sends them directly into the championship match. DCC will now await the outcome of the Eliminator between Malteenoes Sports Club and Georgetown Cricket XI as the remaining teams battle for the other place in the final.
