SHC S’Team unbeaten, GCC Cowboys bounce back as junior hockey action intensifies

Part of the action in the National Junior Indoor Hockey Championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

SHC S’Team maintained their perfect start in the Under-21 Boys division, while GCC Cowboys bounced back from an opening-night defeat with a commanding victory as the National Junior Indoor Hockey Championships continued on Thursday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Organised by the Guyana Hockey Board, the tournament began on Wednesday and features teams competing across four divisions in the Under-17 and Under-21 age groups.

SHC S’Team followed their opening 4-1 victory over Hikers with another solid showing on Thursday, defeating OFHC Vipers 3-1 to register their second consecutive win.

The result was particularly significant as Vipers had opened their campaign with a thrilling 5-4 victory over GCC Cowboys on Wednesday.

Cowboys, however, responded strongly to that defeat, producing one of Thursday’s most convincing performances with a 6-2 victory over Hikers.

The results have added early interest to the U21 Boys competition, with SHC S’Team making an unbeaten start while Cowboys and Vipers have each recorded a win and a defeat.

In the U21 Girls division, Saints have also established an impressive early record.

After overwhelming Hikers 7-0 on Wednesday, Saints faced a tougher examination against GCC Spartans on Thursday but emerged 2-1 winners.

Spartans had opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over OFHC Bomb Squad, who subsequently recovered to defeat Hikers 3-0 on Thursday.

The U17 Boys division also produced contrasting results over the two nights.

SHC Sigmas experienced both disappointment and success in Group D, losing 2-1 to GCC Outlaws on Wednesday before returning with a comfortable 4-0 victory over SJHS Warriors on Thursday.

In Group C, OFHC Predators opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Multi Alumni before sharing the points with Hikers Hatchets in a 1-1 draw on Thursday.

The U17 Girls division has been equally competitive.

GCC Her-ricanes were involved in a 1-1 draw against OFHC Phantom Troupe on Wednesday in Group A before edging Hikers Junior Jets 2-1 on Thursday.

Group B saw SHC Sensations secure an emphatic 4-0 victory over SJHS Blue Bloods on the opening night.

Blue Bloods returned on Thursday and managed a 0-0 draw against Multi Stars, earning a result after their opening defeat.

With two nights completed, the competition has already produced several notable performances, including Saints’ seven-goal victory, SHC S’Team’s unbeaten start and the strong recoveries by Cowboys and Sigmas.

The National Junior Indoor Championships run from October 7 to 10, with matches being contested at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

The tournament continues with teams seeking to strengthen their positions ahead of the concluding stages today.
