Guyana’s karatekas ready for international test as World Shoto Cup begins in Mexico

Guyana's traditional Shotokan karate athletes are preparing for a major international challenge in Mexico at the fifth ISKF World Shoto Cup Karate Tournament.

Guyana’s traditional Shotokan karate athletes are preparing for a major international challenge in Mexico, where they will compete against opponents from several countries at the fifth ISKF World Shoto Cup Karate Tournament.

The competition, scheduled for October 22–25 in Mérida, Yucatán, will provide an important opportunity for Guyana’s experienced and emerging karatekas to measure their abilities against international opposition.

Team Guyana arrived in Mexico after departing Georgetown on October 21, with a 92-member delegation travelling in two groups through Houston and Panama.

The contingent comprises 46 competitors and officials, supported by an additional 46 parents and supporters who have accompanied the team for the international assignment.

Athletes from Mexico, Barbados, Australia, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, the United States and Belize are among those expected to compete, providing Guyana’s representatives with a strong field of international opponents.

However, before competition gets underway, the Guyanese athletes had an opportunity to benefit from additional technical guidance through two days of international training seminars.

The sessions, on October 22 and 23, were conducted under Shihan Hiroyoshi Okazaki and were expected to help athletes make their final adjustments ahead of competition.

The tournament’s competitive programme opens today with the Junior Rank divisions.

Attention will then turn to the Brown and Black Belt divisions, which are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25.

The World Shoto Cup appearance follows months of preparation by the Guyanese athletes, who have been involved in regular training and national competitions leading up to the event.

Beyond the immediate challenge of competing internationally, ISKF-Guyana views the tournament as an opportunity to evaluate the continued development of traditional Shotokan karate in the country.

The participation of both established and younger competitors also provides an opportunity to build experience and strengthen the next generation of athletes representing Guyana.
