Region Three suffers major power outage

Repairs being done (GPL photo)

Yesterday  at 1 am  the electricity supply in Region 3 was interrupted following a fire at a substation and  affecting customers from Vreed-en-Hoop to Naamryck in Parika and down to Hubu and Naamless.

Minister of Public Utilities Deodat Indar said that customers were without power due to a fire caused by overload/demand at the Substation at Edinburgh, Leonora.

He said that the damage was severe to the electrical cabinets, cables and breakers and the work to repair took 21 hours.

“The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) team worked for 21 hours nonstop to remedy the situation. I wish to thank customers for their understanding and patience when there was none left.

“I wish to thank this team headed by Shaun Hamlet, Divisional Director of Transmission and Distribution at GPL, who worked tirelessly to get the job done. Usually, they are subject to ridicule for outages. This particular incident was no fault of theirs”, he said.

This was the latest major incident on the GPL network. These events continue to raise the ire of members of the public who have been given multiple assurances about the stability of the supply in the backdrop of massive expenditure on the upgrading of transmission and distribution system and the hiring of a Dominican Republic firm, InterEnergy to address weaknesses in the power system.

A major deadline after two years of delay is also approaching at the end of the year when the government has promised that power will be available from the costly gas to energy project.
