Letters To The Editor

No justification for remanding Opposition Leader, constables

Dear Editor,

The recent developments and growing concerns surrounding justice, constitutional rights, and governance in Guyana are inundating and require urgent national intervention.

There is no valid justification for remanding the Opposition Leader, Constable Ryan Greene  and Constable Ashton Chappell over allegations of soliciting CCTV footage.

Remanding them until November 24 under inhumane conditions—and in the instance of Mohamed and Greene, timed specifically before a weekend when lawyers could not appeal is an act of political wickedness – demonstrating deliberate and continued orchestrated efforts to undermine lawful rights.

The time has come for every single Guyanese with a modicum of decency and recognition of justice, as well as those concerned about their individual rights, protection of their families, friends and neighbours, to stand up and say to this government that enough is enough.

We must not only voice our disgust.  When given the chance we must register it with our ballot, which gives the greatest power to our collective voices.

Citizens of Guyana, the draconian measures being meted out to the duly elected Leader of the Opposition, Azruddin Mohamed; and Constable Ryan Greene and Constable Ashton Chappelle, alleged whistleblowers, cannot be allowed to continue. These are in clear violation of laws and rights to their freedom.

Guyana is at a juncture where lawlessness knows no boundaries. All citizens who are not connected to, or in favour, with the powers that be, are at risk of similar violations.

The safety and well-being of Azruddin Mohamed, Constable Greene and Constable Chappell rest squarely at the feet of the Ali/ Jagdeo regime.  The administration must therefore be held fully accountable for any harm, orchestrated or accidental, that might befall any of them – in or out of prison.

The modus operandi is clear enough for the blind to see.

Lest we forget, the PPP has for long been at the centre of countless injustices, unsolved crimes, death squads, extrajudicial murders, and much more – from corruption to electoral fraud and workers violations. They are not above rebuke and accountability.

The more the Ali/ Jagdeo regime gets away with transgressions against the people, the more emboldened they become and the weaker and more vulnerable the citizens are.

People, the time has come where we must question and expose them and others who corrupt our institutions of justice. It is our taxpayer’s money that pays them.

We must challenge those institutions, media and others, that are responsible but fail to act as true watchdogs for the people and instead act as enablers, enforcers, puppets and mercenaries of the Ali/Jagdeo undemocratic, lawless and bloody regime.

Unless we the people, in parliament or out of parliament, uphold the principle that every citizen in a civilised and democratic society is innocent until proven guilty by a credible court of justice, we are silent partners in the crimes of State

The incarceration in this instance, in no way matches the allegations and we must all rise up and condemn this Ali/Jagdeo infraction.  They must be made to answer for their crimes. In and out of Parliament, in the court of public opinion and the courts of law. They are not immune.

Every denial of justice to the people by the Irfaan Ali/Bharrat Jagdeo regime is an act of injustice for which they must one day answer in a Court of Law – even as Parliament sleeps.

How many more years must we wait to hold the Ali /Jagdeo regime accountable?

The constitutional rights of the leader of the Opposition- the Hon. Azruddin Mohamed, Constable Greene and Constable Chappell, and every citizen facing injustice in this country must be respected.

Enough is enough.

Yours faithfully,

Lincoln Lewis
