Woman dies in head-on collision at Coverden, two injured

A 49-year-old woman was killed and two motorists were critically hurt following a head-on collision on the Coverden Public Road, East Bank Demerara, last evening.

In a release today, the police say that the dead woman has been identified as Cheryl Skeete of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara. She was a passenger in motor car PAB 6733, which was being driven by a 49-year-old woman from Soesdyke.

According to police, the crash occurred at about 6:45 pm and involved motor cars PAM 6733 and PAM 2468, the latter driven by a 44-year-old man of Coverden, East Bank Demerara.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of PAM 2468 was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the Coverden Public Road, allegedly at a fast rate behind another vehicle, PYY 615.

Police said the driver attempted to overtake that vehicle but collided head-on with PAM 6733, which was travelling south along the eastern carriageway.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged in the collision.

Emergency Medical Technicians pronounced Skeete dead at the scene.

The female driver of PAM 6733 was extricated from the vehicle by members of the Guyana Fire Service and taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

The driver of PAM 2468 was also taken to the Diamond Regional Hospital. Police said his condition is critical but stable.

Skeete’s body was taken to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police are continuing their investigations into the fatal crash.
