Police say continuing to support sergeant, wife injured at Vergenoegen

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday said it has continued to provide support to Sergeant Leon Singh and his wife following the traffic accident in which both were seriously injured, responding to social media reports appealing for public assistance on their behalf.

In a statement, the Force said it had “remained steadfast” in its support for the couple since the accident and rejected any suggestion that the injured officer had been abandoned.

According to the GPF, its Welfare Department, Regional Police Division Three, senior officers and fellow ranks have been working to ensure that Singh and his wife receive the care, assistance and support available to them during their recovery.

The Force said Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken, members of the administration and other ranks continue to monitor Singh’s recovery and remain committed to his welfare and that of his family.

The GPF also expressed sympathy to the couple for what it described as the personal loss they have reportedly suffered and wished them “strength, comfort and a full and speedy recovery.”

While noting that members of the public are free to provide assistance if they wish, the Force maintained that Sergeant Singh “has not been abandoned” and continues to receive its full support during his recovery.

The statement follows a public appeal for assistance for Singh and his wife, Kareena De Souza, who remain recuperating from injuries sustained in the June 14 accident on the Vergenoegen Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, which claimed the life of their unborn child.

The appeal came weeks after 20-year-old Ryan Rajkumar of Lot 897 Tuschen Housing Scheme pleaded guilty to multiple traffic-related offences arising from the crash. Appearing before Magistrate Alisha George at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, Rajkumar admitted to taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, driving without a licence and breach of insurance. He was fined a total of $110,000, disqualified from obtaining a driver’s licence for two years and remanded into custody.

According to police, the accident occurred at about 7.30 pm and involved minibus BAM 9180, driven by Rajkumar, and motor car PNN 4060, driven by Singh, 32, of Parika Facade, East Bank Essequibo.

At the time of the collision, Singh was travelling with his wife, who was eight months pregnant.

The crash left both with serious injuries. Singh suffered fractures to both arms and multiple fractures to his right leg and has since undergone four surgeries, while De Souza sustained a broken hip, a broken leg, a fractured ankle and facial injuries and has undergone two surgeries. She also lost the couple’s unborn baby.

The couple, who have two young children, remain unable to care for themselves as they undergo lengthy recoveries.

Relatives have appealed for donations of groceries, adult pampers, baby supplies and financial assistance to help support the family during their recovery.
