Five Chinese found mining illegally, charged with immigration offences

Five Chinese nationals have been charged with immigration offences after police said they were found to have overstayed their permitted time in Guyana.

According to a police statement, the five men, aged 31, 34, 50, 53 and 59, were initially arrested on June 16 during an enforcement operation at the Rock Creek Mining Area, Puruni, Region Seven, where they were allegedly engaged in illegal mining activities.

Police said checks of their travel documents subsequently revealed that they had overstayed the period they were permitted to remain in the country.

The men were later charged with the immigration offences and processed to appear before the court.
