Vendors complain to Opposition Leader about Plaisance Market

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and Member of Parliament Duarte Hetsberger yesterday visited the Plaisance Market where vendors raised concerns over what they said were unfulfilled promises and longstanding issues affecting the facility.

According to a statement posted on Team Mohamed’s Facebook page, vendors said they were promised compensation by Local Government Minister Priya Manickchand following flooding at the market in November last year but have not received any assistance to date. They also claimed that a promised fence for the market was never constructed.

Kiskadee Watch contacted the Minister in an attempt to get a response to the vendors’ claims but while she shared a video of an architect’s impression of an intended new market for the village, she did not answer the substantive questions posed by this publication.

Yesterday, the vendors complained about the condition of the market’s infrastructure, noting that several roofing sheets need replacing and that the existing washroom is in poor condition.

They also said a newly constructed washroom remains closed and called for the facility to be commissioned and opened for use.

Other concerns raised included the absence of a cleaner during the week, which vendors said has resulted in unsanitary conditions, and the lack of daytime security at the market.

The vendors also reiterated calls for the construction of a modern market facility and questioned when the promised project would become a reality.
