Georgetown Mayor Alfred Mentore yesterday said the city has intensified desilting works in central Georgetown with the acquisition of a new slush drainage machine.
In a post on his Facebook page, Mentore said a team from the council’s engineering department, led by City Engineer Kabila Hollingsworth and including Deputy Mayor Denise Miller and several councillors, carried out drainage works and removed pallets around the Stabroek and Bourda markets.
According to the mayor, drainage works will continue daily, particularly in central Georgetown, as the city seeks to bring relief to residents and businesses affected by flooding.
He said the council also intends to contract works in other constituencies following a recent pre-qualification exercise aimed at preparing areas for the use of the new machine and council trucks, to be followed by monthly maintenance.
Mentore added that the city may need to acquire another drainage machine and additional equipment, including floodlights, to improve its effectiveness and facilitate nighttime operations.
