Gov’t, GOA promise increased support for triple gold medallist Noel

: L-R: Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs, Raekwon Noel, Assistant Directors of Sport Franklin Wilson and Melissa Dow-Richardson.

The Government of Guyana and the Guyana Olympic Association have promised continued and increased support for swimmer Raekwon Noel following his historic three-gold-medal performance at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The commitment was made on Sunday afternoon when Noel and members of Guyana’s swimming team were welcomed home after returning from the Games.

Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs said the government, through the ministry and the National Sports Commission, would continue to support Noel’s development.

Jacobs added that he and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson Jr. would meet with Noel and his parents to discuss further assistance. Noel is expected to spend some time in Guyana before returning to the United States, where he is studying.

Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) president Godfrey Munroe also congratulated Noel and said the national Olympic body intended to continue and increase its support for the swimmer.

Noel won gold medals in the men’s 200-metre individual medley, 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle. He broke the Games records in the three events and lowered his own national record in the 200m individual medley.

Among those present to welcome him were Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) president Yulema Phillips, Noel’s parents, local swimmers and other supporters.

Noel thanked the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, the GOA, GASA, coach Stephanie Fraser, his parents, teammates and others who contributed to his preparation and success.

His three gold medals accounted for most of Guyana’s four medals at the Games. The country’s other medal was won by Ceili Peterson, who secured bronze in the women’s 49-kilogram kyorugi division in taekwondo.
