Guyana’s Desmond Amsterdam, Colin Lewis and Terron Wintz were eliminated from the boxing competition at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games after suffering quarterfinal defeats at Combat Pavilion No. 2 in Santo Domingo on Tuesday.
Wintz’s campaign in the men’s 70kg division ended in the quarter-final against Puerto Rico’s Angel Llanos. The referee stopped the contest two minutes and 55 seconds into the round handing Llanos the victory by referee-stopped-contest decision.
Amsterdam was beaten 4-1 on points by Venezuela’s Diego Pereyra in the men’s 80kg quarterfinals following three competitive rounds.
Both fighters entered the bout after recording unanimous 5-0 victories in the previous round. The opening round was closely contested, with three judges scoring it for Pereyra and two favouring Amsterdam.
Amsterdam produced the only knockdown of the fight in the second round. However, all five judges still awarded the round 10-9 to Pereyra, giving the Venezuelan a strong advantage heading into the final round.
Pereyra maintained his lead in the third, with four judges scoring the round in his favour. The final cards read 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 and 29-28 for Pereyra, while one judge scored the contest 29-28 for Amsterdam.
Lewis also suffered a narrow defeat in the men’s 65kg division, losing 3-2 on points to Suriname’s Domelzo Schet.
Schet won the opening round on all five judges’ cards and remained ahead on three cards after the second. Lewis responded strongly in the final round, earning the support of three judges, but his late rally was not enough to overturn the deficit.
The final scores were 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27 for Schet, while two judges scored the contest 29-28 for Lewis. No knockdowns or warnings were recorded during the bout.
The three defeats ended Guyana’s medal hopes through Amsterdam, Lewis and Wintz, despite competitive performances from Amsterdam and Lewis during the quarterfinal stage.
