he Ministry of Public Works has ordered the immediate removal of several large piles of sand placed along the main road at Mahaica, warning that it will intervene if the owner fails to comply.
Photographs accompanying a notice posted on the ministry’s Facebook page showed the sand occupying sections of the roadside. The ministry described the material as an unacceptable encumbrance.
It said the owner would be held responsible for any damage caused to the road surface or drain covers while removing the sand.
Should the owner fail to act, the ministry said it would remove and seize the material. The cost of the exercise would be charged to the owner, who would be required to settle the amount before reclaiming the sand.
The ministry also warned persons against moving materials from one roadside location to another to evade removal notices, saying property would be seized where owners continued to disregard its instructions.
It added that neither the ministry nor the government was interested in permanently retaining seized property and appealed for the public’s cooperation in keeping roadways clear and safe.
