The Ministry of Public Works has issued a final notice to vendors occupying sections of the Railway Embankment at Buxton to relocate, saying that their continued presence is delaying the East Coast Road Improvement Project and poses safety risks.
The ministry said yesterday that alternative spaces had been allocated to affected vendors on a newly constructed tarmac adjacent to the Buxton-Foulis Neighbourhood Democratic Council compound.
According to the statement, 61 persons participated in a lottery exercise for spaces at the new location. However, some vendors and caravans remain within the alignment of the road project.
During a site visit, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill called for their immediate removal to allow construction to continue safely and without further interruption.
The ministry said it recognised the need to accommodate persons displaced by major infrastructure projects but maintained that vendors were expected to cooperate once alternative arrangements had been provided.
It added that the remaining caravans would be moved during the course of this week with the assistance of ministry-provided Hiab trucks.
The assistance, the ministry said, was intended to facilitate the timely relocation of the vendors and clear the project alignment.
Residents, businesses and other stakeholders occupying active project areas were also urged to cooperate with contractors and the ministry to prevent delays and reduce risks to workers and members of the public.
The ministry said it would continue engaging affected stakeholders and providing practical assistance where possible, while taking steps to ensure that infrastructure works proceed safely and within the required timelines.
