The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the Indian Armed Forces are discussing ways to expand cooperation in training, equipment, and technical support across the land, air, maritime, and cyber domains.
A release today from the GDF said that the discussions commenced with the Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan and the Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Chinmoy Naik, meeting a visiting Military Training and Advisory Team (MTAT) from India led by Colonel Jaydeep Koley, Colonel, Co-ordination-Perspective Planning.
The visit builds on ongoing military engagement between the two countries, including Brigadier Khan’s November 2024 visit to India. During that visit, the release said that he met senior defence officials and toured military equipment manufacturing facilities, where they discussed opportunities for training, equipment acquisition, and closer military collaboration.
Khan welcomed the multidisciplinary team and emphasised the importance of aligning bilateral cooperation with the GDF’s operational requirements. High Commissioner Naik reaffirmed India’s commitment to sustained defence engagement
with Guyana and encouraged the GDF to draw on the team’s expertise in determining areas for further military support, the release said.
The Adjutant General, Colonel Lloyd Souvenir; Colonel Administration and Quartering, Commander Roger Nurse; the Inspector General, Colonel Natasha Stanford-Francis; and other senior officers also attended the opening engagement.
The release said that the discussions examined the GDF’s existing capabilities, operational requirements and potential areas for Indian military assistance. Commander Nurse will serve as the GDF’s coordinator for the defence cooperation.
As part of the visit, the Indian team is scheduled to tour GDF bases and units, including the Air Corps, infantry battalions and Coast Guard facilities, to evaluate capabilities and identify specific areas where Indian support could be applied.
