Defending champions Slingerz FC opened their Guyana Football Federation Elite League Season Eight campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over Police FC last night at the National Training Centre, Providence.
Former Police striker Neron Barrow scored the decisive goal against his old club in the 23rd minute, giving Slingerz a winning start to their title defence.
Police battled to find an equaliser, but Slingerz protected their advantage for the remainder of the contest to secure all three points.
Earlier in the double-header, Santos FC came from behind to defeat Anns Grove United 2-1.
Yohance Francis handed Anns Grove an early lead when he found the back of the net in the 10th minute. However, Santos responded through Tyrice Dennis in the 34th minute to send the teams into the halftime break level at 1-1.
The match remained evenly poised until Ian Daniels struck in the 71st minute to complete the comeback and secure maximum points for Santos.
A sizable crowd turned out at the Providence venue to witness the two matches as the new Elite League season continued to gather momentum.
Both games were also broadcast live on DAZN. The league will continue next weekend with another round of matches.
