Mars wins battle of perfect records, moves top of Pegasus Chess League

Davion Mars became the sole unbeaten player in the Pegasus Weekly Chess League after defeating Keron Sandiford.

Davion Mars became the sole unbeaten player in the Pegasus Weekly Chess League after defeating Keron Sandiford in their highly anticipated Round Four clash on Monday night.

Both players entered the encounter with perfect records of three wins from three games. However, Mars prevailed after a tense contest that remained evenly balanced for much of the night.

Playing with the white pieces in an Exchange Variation of the French Defence, Mars and Sandiford eventually reached a quiet endgame. A seemingly routine exchange of rooks on move 39 proved decisive.

Post-game analysis showed that the resulting pawn ending strongly favoured Mars. He converted the advantage four moves later to secure his fourth consecutive victory.

Mars now leads the league with four points from four games. Sandiford and Ryan Oniel McKay are tied one point behind on three points.

McKay defeated Woman Candidate Master Jessica Callender in another key Round Four result, while Odinnie Nehezie Reece overcame Sachin Beharry. Oluwadare Oyeyipo defeated Martin Poon, and Jaden Taylor got the better of Owen Mickle.

With three rounds remaining, the league will pause for the Chess Olympiad before resuming on October 5.

League organiser FIDE Master Anthony Drayton and two players competing in the tournament will represent Guyana at the Olympiad in Uzbekistan from September 14 to 29.

The Pegasus Weekly Chess League is organised by Drayton’s Chess Club in partnership with the Pegasus Chess Club and the Guyana Chess Federation.
