Concerns over unpaid prize money from the Divine Entertainment Summer Super Cup were among the issues raised by Akanni Blair as he resigned with immediate effect as third vice-president of the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA).
In a letter dated September 9, 2026, Blair claimed the UDFA executive had failed to intervene after successful teams and some individual players were not paid their prizes following the conclusion of the competition on August 29.
The Summer Super Cup was organised by a private group but sanctioned by the UDFA. Blair said the prize money should have been lodged with the Association and alleged that the executive had not issued a public statement or acted to resolve the situation.
The tournament was one of several issues highlighted in Blair’s resignation letter to UDFA President Wainewright Bethune.
Blair also raised concerns about the Association’s leadership direction, financial accountability, sponsorship efforts and the administration of competitions.
He alleged that the executive had operated in a haphazard manner and had consistently failed to account for the UDFA’s financial position and dealings. He also criticised its efforts to secure sponsorship and raise funds.
Blair said he had accepted a place on the executive because he believed he could contribute to positive change. However, he described the leadership approach as “stubbornly myopic and lethargic” and said the organisation’s current operations did not match his professional values.
“I did not make this decision lightly,” Blair said while explaining that he resigned after careful reflection.
Despite his strong criticism, Blair thanked the UDFA for the opportunity to serve and wished the Association well.
