A 14-year-old student died early Saturday morning after the motorcycle on which he was being transported collided with a horse along the Number 50 Village Public Road, Corentyne.
Dead is Giresh Lautan of Number 52 Village. He was a Grade Nine student of the Skeldon Line Path Secondary School.
Reports are that Lautan was the pillion rider on a motorcycle being ridden by 19-year-old Deon Rodney when the collision occurred. The two were reportedly heading to Number 43 Village.
Lautan was taken to the Number 75 Village Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In an interview with reporters, the teen’s mother, Anita Taman, said she learnt of the accident at around 6 am.
Taman alleged that Rodney, her brother-in-law, visited the family’s home at approximately 1 am while she was asleep and took Lautan to Number 43 Village, where her sister resides.
She said Rodney awakened her son and left with him without informing her.
According to Taman, her son and Rodney shared a close relationship and would often play the online video game Free Fire together from their respective homes.
She described Lautan as a responsible child who helped care for his younger siblings whenever she was at work.
It was unclear whether Rodney was injured in the collision or was in police custody. A police statement on the accident had not been issued up to press time.
