US ambassador meets Strategic Bauxite principals on US$150m expansion

United States Ambassador Nicole Theriot has met representatives of Strategic Bauxite Inc to discuss plans to expand its refractory-grade bauxite operations in Guyana following the company’s acquisition of First Bauxite LLC.

The proposed expansion is backed by US$85.5 million in equity financing from the United States government’s Industrial Base Analysis and Sustainment programme and US$64.5 million in private sector co-investment—a total of US$150 million.

According to a statement yesterday from the US Embassy, the funds will support the expansion of the Bonasika bauxite mine, the construction of new calcination facilities in Guyana and a subsequent brown-fused alumina plant in the United States.

Strategic Bauxite acquired Guyana-based First Bauxite in July. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The embassy said Strategic Bauxite’s representatives reiterated the company’s commitment to safety, environmental performance, regulatory compliance and engagement with surrounding communities.

“The United States welcomes partnerships that strengthen critical supply chains while supporting responsible investment and sustainable economic opportunities in Guyana,” the embassy said.

The statement did not name the Strategic Bauxite officials who attended the meeting, give a timetable for the expansion or say how many jobs would be created.

Kiskadee Watch reported last month that the US government’s investment was intended to reduce American dependence on China and Chinese-owned entities for refractory-grade bauxite. The mineral is used to manufacture heat-resistant materials for guided missiles, rockets, military aircraft and space systems, as well as in steel and aluminium production and industrial furnaces.

The US government has said the project, when fully operational, is expected to meet all US military demand for brown-fused alumina and the country’s full demand for refractory-grade bauxite.

Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat had previously told Kiskadee Watch that the new owner planned to invest US$100 million in its Guyana operations to expand production, create jobs and establish a processing facility for greater value-added production. It is unclear whether that figure is separate from or forms part of the US$150 million now identified.

Questions have persisted about Strategic Bauxite’s ownership, financial standing and mining experience. Kiskadee Watch previously reported that little public information was available about the company and that its website had become inaccessible after initially displaying only a “Launching Soon” page.

First Bauxite Chief Sustainability Officer Elliott Lincoln had said there were no planned layoffs, that the existing senior management team would remain and that operations would continue under the First Bauxite name. He also said the Guyana Government approved the acquisition before it was completed.

The identities of Strategic Bauxite’s ultimate beneficial owners, the purchase price for First Bauxite and the company’s record of previous mining operations have not been publicly disclosed.
