The 4,200-ft reinforced concrete Matthews Ridge Airstrip in Region One is now 100% complete.

A release yesterday from the Ministry of Public Works said that this will see larger aircraft, including Beechcraft-type aircraft able to land at Matthews Ridge.

This project significantly improves connectivity, emergency and medevac response, and supporting greater economic activity.

The release said that the project was delivered by the Ministry of Public Works’ Special Projects Unit under its Community Participation Model, creating employment for 60 Matthews Ridge residents and 15 skilled workers from Mabaruma.

The upgraded airstrip also includes a parking apron, taxiways, international-standard runway markings and visual aid lighting to support night-time emergency operations.
