Man shot at Uitvlugt, teacher robbed at East La Penitence

A man was shot while resisting a robbery at Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, and a teacher was robbed at gunpoint at East La Penitence, Georgetown, in separate incidents on Sunday, according to police reports.

At Uitvlugt, a 54-year-old self-employed man was standing outside a supermarket on the lower floor of his residence around 6.25 pm when two masked men approached on a black motorcycle.

Police said one of the men, who was wearing a reflective vest, dismounted and attempted to forcibly remove the victim’s jewellery.

When the man resisted, the suspect reportedly drew a handgun and demanded the jewellery. After the victim refused, the gunman allegedly fired two rounds, striking him in his right ankle and left leg.

The injured man retreated into the supermarket, while the gunman rejoined the waiting motorcycle and both suspects fled.

The victim was taken to the De Kinderen Public Hospital, where he was treated and admitted in a stable condition. Police recovered two suspected 9mm spent shells at the scene.

Earlier, around 8.50 am, a 31-year-old teacher was robbed as she was about to park her motorcycle and enter her yard at East La Penitence.

According to police, two men approached on a red and white XR motorcycle. The pillion rider dismounted, pointed a handgun at the woman and fired two rounds before taking her silver Haojue motorcycle, registration CS 9982, a Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra phone and $40,000.

Police said the gunman then rejoined the waiting motorcycle and both men escaped. The report did not explain how the stolen motorcycle was removed.

One suspected .32-calibre spent shell was recovered at the scene. No injuries were reported.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage in both cases. No arrests have been made.
