A 32-seater school bus has been handed over to Matthews Ridge, Region One, following residents’ requests for transportation assistance for schoolchildren.
Housing Minister Collin Croal handed over the bus, which the Ministry of Housing said fulfilled a commitment made by President Irfaan Ali during an August 5 Cabinet outreach to the community.
According to the ministry, Ali had instructed the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs to address the request.
At the handover, Croal called for a management committee to oversee the bus’s operation and maintenance and ensure that it is used to transport children safely to and from school.
He said the Regional Democratic Council’s Education Department would visit the community this week to meet residents and put arrangements in place for the service to begin.
Matthews Ridge Community Development Council Chairperson Sharon Phillips welcomed the bus, saying transportation difficulties had been affecting schoolchildren. Resident Shondell St. Juste also welcomed the assistance and emphasised the importance of safe travel to school.
Croal also handed over footballs and volleyballs to CDC Vice Chairperson Janice Moses for sporting activities in the community.
