With a deadlock in the contest after six rounds of voting, the UAE yesterday nominated its Minister of State Lana Nusseibeh for the post of UN Secretary General.
Her entry is seen as a bid to end the stalemate over the SG vote which has seen Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett running a close second for most of the race to Costa Rica’s Rebeca Grynspan.
In the last round Rodrigues-Birkett and all of the other candidates however saw vetoes from permanent members of the UN Security Council. Those votes mean that those candidates would not likely move ahead unless there were further negotiations with the permanent members who had signaled a veto.
Nusseibeh’s entry followed the belief that even though Grynspan has been the frontrunner from the start she has not been able to mobilize a consensus for acceptance in the role.
Analysts say Nusseibeh will face stern questioning over her country’s human rights record.
