Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has ruled out entering into a political alliance with either the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) or the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), insisting that his We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party will maintain its independence.
Mohamed made the position clear during his first press conference as Opposition Leader on Monday, when he was questioned about the possibility of political cooperation with other parties.
“I mentioned before the elections, I won’t be (coalescing) with no political party because that is what the people requested,” Mohamed said.
His remarks come against the backdrop of recent discussions between WIN and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), the coalition led by the PNCR, on matters of mutual political concern.
The two sides previously met to discuss issues including the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), the impasse affecting the functioning of the Region Ten Regional Democratic Council and nominations to the Local Government Commission. Their August discussions did not produce final decisions on the substantive matters, with both sides agreeing to consult their respective leadership and membership on the way forward.
At Monday’s press conference, WIN General Secretary Odessa Primus also addressed the status of possible further discussions with the PNCR-led coalition. She said PNCR leader Aubrey Norton had contacted her to request a meeting but had not subsequently followed up with a proposed date and time.
Primus said she did not interpret the lack of follow-up as evidence of a problem between the parties.
WIN emerged as a major political force following the 2025 general elections, securing 16 seats in the National Assembly and establishing Mohamed as the country’s Opposition Leader.
His position leaves open how WIN will approach future negotiations with other parties, particularly on matters requiring cross-party agreement.
