After 12 years, Guyana has reclaimed the overall championship title at the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG), finishing with 475 points, ahead of French Guiana (444) and hosts Suriname (431).
A release from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport said: “Our student-athletes delivered an outstanding performance, particularly in track and field, where Guyana amassed an impressive 334 points, while also securing the top position in men’s futsal.
This historic achievement is a testament to the talent, dedication and determination of our young athletes, as well as the Government of Guyana’s continued investment in sports development”.
It added that under President Irfaan Ali, the Government has remained committed to investing in student-athletes through improved sporting facilities, greater access to training, increased competitive opportunities and programmes aimed at nurturing talent from the grassroots level.
“Today’s victory is another demonstration that our investments in youth and sports are yielding meaningful results. It reinforces our commitment to creating an environment where every young Guyanese athlete has the opportunity to develop, compete and succeed at the highest level”, the release added.
