Azruddin Mohamed arrested after Kitty shooting involving extradition witness

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and another man in handcuffs last evening

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and two other men remain in police custody following a shooting incident involving Special Branch Head Senior Superintendent Prem Narine last night, with police reporting the discovery of an unlicensed firearm in their vehicle and Mohamed’s sister alleging that the weapon was planted.

Narine, one of the main witnesses in the extradition proceedings involving Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed, had previously told the court that he considered the Opposition Leader a “threat to society and national security”, Kiskadee Watch reported on September 8. He maintained that assessment during further cross-examination later that month.

Police and Mohamed’s sister, Hana Khamelia, have provided sharply conflicting accounts of Monday night’s incident, which the force said began near Narine’s Barr Street, Kitty residence at approximately 11.45 pm.

What appears to be a bullet hole in the vehicle the Opposition Leader and others were
in at the time of the incident

According to the police statement issued this morning, Narine was at home when he observed a black Toyota Allion, registration PXX 5300, travelling slowly along Barr Street. The vehicle passed his residence before returning shortly afterwards.

Police said that as the car approached on the second occasion, Narine heard what appeared to be a gunshot, took cover and discharged several rounds from his service firearm towards the vehicle, which subsequently drove away.

The statement did not identify who allegedly fired the initial shot.

The vehicle was later intercepted at the junction of Vlissengen Road and Sandy Babb Street. Police identified its occupants as Mohamed, 39, of Houston, East Bank Demerara; Mario Mohamed, 25, of Timehri; and Eugene Thorne, 35, a driver, also of Timehri.

The three men were arrested and escorted to the Kitty Police Station.

Police said a search of the car, conducted in the presence of all three occupants, uncovered a .32 Taurus pistol without a serial number and three live rounds of matching ammunition. The men were subsequently arrested in connection with the alleged possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.

One .32 spent shell was recovered on the southern side of Barr Street, obliquely opposite Narine’s residence, while four 9mm spent shells were also recovered, police said.

The force stated that the firearm, ammunition and spent shells were lodged pending ballistics examination and that CCTV footage from the area would be reviewed. It said investigations concerned the alleged discharge of a loaded firearm with intent and possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.

Khamelia, in a Facebook post, she said the vehicle sustained three bullet holes after between five and seven shots were fired, causing its occupants to drive away in fear.

She alleged that when the car was intercepted at Sandy Babb Street and Vlissengen Road, Narine fired at least five more shots before forcing the occupants out at gunpoint and onto the ground.

According to her account, a search at the scene found nothing. She said Narine then drove the vehicle to the police station, where another search also yielded nothing.

Khamelia alleged that the car was subsequently left unlocked and unattended across the street from the station. She said a further search at approximately 2.21 am uncovered a weapon beneath the accelerator pedal and charged that it was planted.

The police statement did not specify the time of the reported firearm discovery or address the allegations of earlier searches, assault, threats or the vehicle being left unsecured. It also did not state whether Mohamed had sustained injuries or whether Narine’s service firearm had been lodged for examination.

Narine’s involvement comes against the backdrop of his testimony in the Mohameds’ extradition proceedings before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman. Kiskadee Watch reported that his assessment of Mohamed as a security threat was given under cross-examination by defence attorney Siand Dhurjon, who questioned the officer’s role in the proceedings and in the October 31, 2025 arrests of the two men.

Last night’s incident also occurred hours after Mohamed complained publicly about the search of another vehicle associated with him and alleged that it had been damaged after being clamped at Parika on Saturday.

In that matter, police said vehicle PAB 4000 was clamped near the Parika Stelling to facilitate a dangerous driving investigation. The force said commuter complaints were corroborated by Safe Country Camera footage showing the vehicle undertaking others along the Cornelia Ida Public Road.

That statement did not name Mohamed and said the clamping “was not based on the identity or status of the vehicle’s occupant”.

Mohamed said on Monday that officers subsequently searched the vehicle and found nothing. He also alleged that its bonnet had been damaged while it remained clamped and questioned the repeated searches of his vehicles for illegal firearms and ammunition.

The car identified in this morning’s police statement, PXX 5300, bears a different registration from the vehicle involved in the Parika matter.
