Boxing programme  under way in prison

Going through their paces

Both male and female inmates in the prison system are currently participating in the boxing programme aimed at enhancing their rehabilitation.

This is the first time female inmates have been exposed to this type of training programme, a release from the Guyana Prison Service said.

The programme helps inmates build skills, self-control, focus, and discipline.

Participants in this programme are closely monitored by coaching team members Adrian Thomas and Wincel Thomas, who ensure that the inmates follow the techniques and guidance during training to prevent injuries, the release said.

Inmates are exposed to stance, balance, and guard (the foundation); footwork and distance management; fundamental offensive strikes; defensive techniques and head movement; combinations; timing and rhythm; pad work and heavy bag drills; hand wrapping and gear maintenance; and ring safety.

This boxing programme is being held in partnership with the Guyana Boxing Association.
